Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, and other goodness from the 50s

I've just finished reading another Bill Bryson book, The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid. I seem to be becoming a bit of an aficionado.

It's a [hilarious] must-read memoir for anyone who desires to comprehend people who grew up in the 50s and 60s (like my parents, for example). Bryson goes over the prevailing themes of this era: the Red Scare, the wacky foods, and the infatuation with home appliances to name a few.

Bryson's recollection of food from the 50s and 60s had me thinking back to my own adolescence, and *aha* something came to mind. In anyone else's family was it a treat to have carrots and cabbage molded into green Jello? I thought this was unique to my own nuclear bunch, but this concoction is still alive and well on the internet -- a resonating icon of the 50s, sort of like atomic radiation.

Actually it's pretty good; I happily consume TWO of my daily 'strive for five' in a green wiggly format. Truthfully, Jello was one of my favorite desserts growing up, and I'm glad to see it put to creative uses. "J-E-L-L-O.... It's alive!!!"
